By the end of 2008, the road mileage in Tibet had reached 51,300 km with every county accessible to roads, according to the Tibet Autonomous Regional Transport Department.
Now a road network has taken shape in the region, with five national highways, 15 trunk highways and 375 secondary highways.
There was no regular road in Tibet before its peaceful liberation 1951, with the transport of goods having to depend on humans and animals.
After the peaceful liberation, the central government carried out the first construction project in Tibet--building roads linking Sichuan and Qinghai to Tibet's capital of Lhasa on steep mountains at an altitude of 3,000 meters above sea level. After that, major roads linking Xinjiang to Tibet, Yunnan to Tibet, and China to Nepal were completed one after another.
