1.2 bln yuan invested to promote development of rural tourism

Tibet has invested 1.1799 billion yuan to develop the rural tourism during the "11th Five-Year Plan" period (2006-2010).

Tourism has apparently begun to perform its functions to benefit local people, which are demonstrated with the 222 newly-established tourism households and 100 tourism projects.

Up to 2010, a total of 12,029 households with 48,120 Tibetans involved in tourism industry, according to the regional tourism authority.

Meanwhile, the region’s gross tourism revenue reached 294 million yuan, with the average household income and per capita income hitting 24,474 yuan and6,118 yuan respectively.

Badro, director of Tibet's Tourism Bureau said, in the next five years, Tibet will support regions with tourist advantage, and encourage more rural people to participate in the booming industry. The region is estimated to achieve 1.8 billion yuan in tourism revenue with 30 million people engaging in tourism industry by the end of 2015.

Statistics shows that Tibet has received 2,125 million tourists and made 22.62 billion yuan from the tourism industry during the "11th Five-Year Plan" period.
