BEIJING, Nov. 1 (Xinhuanet) -- The Kangba Theater is exceptionally eye-catching among the numerous Tibetan-style buildings in Dukezong Ancient City in Shangri-la County, Deqen Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in Yunnan Province.

The theater, covering an area of 3,600 square meters, was founded by Xie Xingke, a 1.9-m-tall sportsman-turned-businessman.

Xie, 49, retired from his sports career in 1985 and started doing business in 1989 when China initiated the reform and opening up drive.

Having engaged in many industries, including catering, entertainment, garment and jewelry, Xie shifted his focus to cultural communication.

Therefore, he established the Kangba Theater in order to provide a platform for local folk artists to showcase their skills.

"The theater will not only display Tibetan folk culture, but also bring in overseas culture to Shangri-la," said Xie.

He added that singers from the Tibetan ethnic group and other ethnic groups inside and outside China will be invited to perform every week.

Xie expressed his hope that some day he can turn the theater into "an platform for folk artists around the world."
