Editor's Notes: The following article is released by the Tibet branch of the Buddhist Association of China on March 15, and translated into English by China Tibet Online word by word.
According to theories of Chinese Tibetan Buddhist, the act of ending one's own life on one's own, id est, committing suicide or killing oneself, is a serious sin that should never be adopted. There are several forms of suicide behaviors: self-immolation, drowning oneself in a river, taking poison, hanging or killing oneself with knife or gun. Whatever the form is, the sin will create an insurmountable obstacle to reincarnate into human beings with leisure and all advantages to practice Buddhism.
First of all, Tsongkhapa, the great teacher, said: "The life of person with leisure and all advantages to practice Buddhism is more precious than the rare jewels, and it is only one chance that one could hold the priceless life." Tsongkhapa elaborated the truth for several times that it is an incredibly precious chance for one to be born as a human being in this life, if you spoiled the treasurable life, you would commit the sin of damaging the human life with leisure and advantages to practice Buddhism.
Secondly, the core of Buddhism is to diminish all the evil intentions. Buddhism is a religion with philanthropy and mercy, having no ill intention against others, which distinguishes from the outside doctrines, and all these are fundamental to Buddhism. The Buddha once mentioned: "Behaviors harming others are not doing good deeds or accumulating any virtue", and it is easy to see similar commandment quotes in different sutras of Buddhist scriptures.
Thirdly, suicide is a violation to proclaiming oneself. In the Sutra of Turning to the Three Treasures, it is mentioned that conversion to the Buddhism demands of abandoning any actions could do harm to all the beings around the world. Various Buddhism theories and causes prove suicide could impair other living creatures. Billions of parasites co-exist in human’s body. Once people commit to suicide, these parasites cannot survive. Obviously, the cause of these parasites' death is directly related to the suicidal body. The existence of parasites in human bodies is not only mentioned in sutra but in fact seen through many scientific instruments.
Fourthly, suicide is a violation to sutta and Tantra. In Tantra, the Buddha states, "Suicide is a serious sin that equals to murdering the immortal and the one who commits to this sin would not reincarnate for nine generations." It is conclude that suicide is an evil behavior against the Buddhism, the human being and the society.
As mentioned above, all the followers to Tibetan Buddhism have known that suicide is a stupid behavior that no one should commit. Therefore, as believers of Tibetan buddism, it is a responsibility for us to bear the sutra and commandments in mind, treasure philanthropy and mercy, and put an end to the suicide behavior.
