Photo taken on May 21 shows that a monk performs Buddhist rituals at the ceremony. The Buddha Painting Unfolding Festival is held annually on the 11th day of April according to the Tibetan calendar. During the festival, a huge embroidery Thangka bearing the image of Sakyamuni will be displayed for Buddhism believers to pay homage to. The Thangka Festival was held on Tuesday, attracting many believers to the monastery to pray, get blessed and appreciate the big and vividly woven thangka. Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447 by the First Dalai Lama, is one of the Big Six Monasteries of the Gelug sect of Buddhism in Tibet. Also called the Heap of Glory, the monastery covers nearly 300,000 square meters in Shigatse, Tibet's second-largest city, after expansions by the Fourth Panchen Lama and his successors.
